The National Lentil Festival awarded the Jim and Amy Thompson Family as the 2014 Lentil Family of the Year in early December at the Washington Pea and Lentil Growers Association annual meeting. Shown from left to right are Jim and Amy Thompson and Lil’ Lentil Royalty, Kurtis and Karli Johnston. The Thompsons are dry-land farmers, having taken over a 100-year-old family farm in the early ’90s, growing wheat, dry peas, lentils and barley. Jim Thompson is a fourth generation farmer, with a family tradition of serving the industry. Jim Thompson has served on the USA Dry Pea and Lentil Council board since 2004, chairing the national board from 2009 to 2012 and serving as commissioner representing Washington State from 1996 to 2002. He also chaired the Washington Pea and Lentil Commission from 2002 to 2005, the only chairman to serve three terms as a Washington Commissioner. In 2005 Jim Thompson joined the WPLGA as a board member and is still serving today.
