Olympic speed skater, Koss, says children deserve a chance to play

Four-time gold medalist delivers Borah Symposium keynote

Four-time Olympic gold medalist Johann Olav Koss said he would not be where he is today - running an international organization that seeks to empower children through sports and play - without the lifelong support of his grandmother.

Koss, a native of Norway, recalled being 11 years old and seeing American Eric Heiden win the world championship in speed skating in Oslo. He said he told his grandmother he wanted to be like Heiden but also had other goals, like helping children in Africa. She told him he could do all of that, he said.
