2015 One year ago today

The New Year came early for about 20 children and their families who celebrated 2016 at the Moscow Food Co-op on Tuesday morning with snacks, crafts and their friends. The eve of the eve of New Year's Eve Party, a Co-op Kids! event, offered children all the materials to make paper crowns, bookmarks and their own snack mixes. ... In a special progress report, Steven Sitler's new probation officer has reported that new and recently suspended chaperones, including Sitler's wife and parents, are in the process of seeking approval again. Sitler was sentenced to life in prison with retained jurisdiction for lewd conduct with a child under 16.

2011 Five years ago today

Until October, the USDA had been sending more than 100,000 slaughter surveillance samples a year to the Washington Animal Disease Diagnostic Laboratory in Pullman to be tested for the disease, but now the samples are sent to a facility in Kansas as part of the USDA's nationwide brucellosis surveillance plan. ... Lewiston will lose its Sears store, according to a preliminary list of 79 planned closures released Thursday. The store, located in the Lewiston Center Mall, is one of 100-120 Sears and Kmarts store the company plans to close.

Moscow submitted a document to Whitman County officials Thursday outlining its concerns on a proposed 650,000-square-foot shopping center that would butt up against the city. The comments focused on water, stormwater runoff, traffic, wetland mitigation and placement, air quality and pedestrian and public safety. ... The Pullman Regional Hospital is growing, and so may its district. The hospital's board of commissioners will have a public hearing Wednesday to discuss a proposed annexation of property.

1991 25 years ago today

Recent hinting by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers strongly suggests the corps will opt for a one-month drawdown of the lower Snake River this coming spring. The corps plans to announce its preference and proposed changes to dam operation at a press conference Jan. 10 in Kennewick. ... A few drunk drivers on New Year's Eve could add to the already abysmal accident record on Palouse highways this year. That's why police in Latah and Whitman counties are appealing to motorists' common sense.
