The Moscow Police Department said Friday it has begun a preliminary investigation into the sudden closing of the six-month-old Moscow firm and the disappearance of the company's owners.

The Sunday morning fire that leveled four buildings under construction at The Grove apartment complex in Pullman leaves hundreds of Washington State University students without a place to live when classes start next month. More than 500 WSU students have signed leases with The Grove. ... Moscow Police responded to multiple vehicle thefts reported around the city over the weekend, but they do not appear related, Lt. Dave Lehmitz said. Most of the vehicles were later found in various places outside the area.

Whitman and Garfield County deputies, along with the Nez Perce County Dive Team and U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, continued the search for a missing swimmer Tuesday and will be in the area again today. Eyewitnesses said the victim and his friends were swimming to a river marker tower near the Sand Dunes area of the Snake River when he became distressed. ... Moscow soon will have an employee whose sole responsibilities include compiling and gathering geographic data about the city. The city council decided at its budget workshop Tuesday to support adding a geographic information systems coordinator to the city staff.

Freshmen enrollment at the University of Idaho will surge 8 to 10 percent this fall, breaking a four-year flat rate, preliminary reports show. General student enrollment is expected to jump 3.5 percent to 5 percent due to students' renewed interest in pursuing careers in the colleges of agriculture, mines and letters and science. ... The Pullman School Board on Wednesday delayed seeking Sunnyside Elementary School construction bids for two weeks to let potential contractors finish other jobs. The decision will not delay the project's September 1994 completion, school officials say.
