MOSCOW

A dog from the Humane Society of the Palouse bit a 10-year-old girl's face at a University of Idaho women's basketball game after 2 p.m. Saturday at the Kibbie Dome, according to Moscow Police Cpt. Paul Kwiatkowski.

The girl was taken to Gritman Medical Center for treatment, Kwiatkowski said.

"Over the weekend one of the dogs in our care acted out in a tragic way while representing the Humane Society of the Palouse at Vandal Dog of the Game," a HSOP statement said.

The statement said Malcom, a large mixed-breed dog, was brought into the shelter about two months ago and "was at ease" around people who worked with him, as well as visitors.

"What we could not know, unfortunately, was how his demeanor might change when his senses were overloaded with new people, new sights and new sounds," the statement said. "Without warning he acted out."

The statement said the humane society apologizes "profusely" to the girl who was bitten and to her family.

"We are taking measures to ensure this never happens again," the statement said.
