PALOUSE — A pickup truck was destroyed in a field fire Wednesday north of Palouse.
Will Edwards, fire chief for the Palouse Fire Department, said a small wildland fire had broken out along Grinnell Road around 4 p.m. Wednesday after a truck drove through the field, which caught the stubble ablaze.
There’s dangers driving a vehicle through pastures, he said, as the muffler and converter can get too hot and they can combust wheat.
Edwards said around 25 acres had burned before firefighters from Whitman County Fire District 4 in Palouse and District 3 in Garfield extinguished the flames. Volunteers from District 12 in Pullman came to assist as well, but the other departments had the fire under control at that time.
