A 20-year-old Washington State University student was killed Tuesday morning in a fatal traffic accident on I-90 in central Washington.

Shannon Prendergast, of Everett, was pronounced dead at the scene at approximately 5:30 a.m. after Justin Tamez, 21, the driver of a 2018 Dodge Ram Pickup, allegedly swerved to miss an animal in the roadway, hit the guardrail and came to a stop upside down and blocking eastbound traffic east of Kittitas, according to the Washington State Patrol.

Prendergast struck the tail end of the pickup in her 2004 Mazda and her vehicle eventually came to a stop two-tenths of a mile away after it hit a fence on the right westbound shoulder of the interstate.

A semi-truck with an unknown driver struck the tail end of the Dodge as well but continued driving and was not located, according to WSP.

Tamez was transported to Kittitas Valley Hospital for injuries he suffered in the accident.
