I'd like to thank folks like Elizabeth Stevens for continuing the work of Dr. Martin Luther King to battle poverty (Letter: "The Poor People's Campaign," June 18).

The current farm bill that passed the House is set to create even more hunger in America by cutting Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, formerly food stamps. We can use our voices to make sure the Senate does not follow suit. With one in five children living in poverty and wondering where their next meal will come from, we can't afford to increase hunger.

Write, call or visit those who represent you in Congress and ask them to vote against any cuts to SNAP. At the same time, ask them to work to end hunger and poverty in the world's richest country.

Our voices can carry the day, but we must speak up now and vote in all elections. Be inspired by Elizabeth Stevens and others and take action.
