A bumper sticker we saw recently said it all: It is time to elect a sane, competent person to lead the country. Voting for Donald Trump is a vote to increase your spending, but not your earnings.
It’s not a vote for “national security.” It’s a vote for further economic insecurity. The latest round of tariffs on Mexican imports is proof that this questionable businessman (with six filings for bankruptcy) is not going to lead this country to stable, economic success.
The U.S. purchases $346 billion worth of imports from Mexico each year (source: Office of the U.S. Trade Representative). Many of the parts in the cars we drive and the machines we use come from Mexico. Much of our food is imported from Mexico. We also import oil.
Trump seems to think that if we just agree to pay up to 25 percent more for these goods, migrants, predominantly from Central America (not Mexico), will stop crossing our southern borders.
What will stop the flow of migrants is supporting those Central American countries in their efforts to create inclusive, stable democracies as well as their efforts to mitigate the effects of climate change in the region.
The only thing these tariffs will accomplish is a flow of money outward from our wallets as we pay more, but get less for our dollar.
It is long past time to elect a sane, competent person to be president of the United States.
