Area roundup: Three Idaho hoops transfers find teams

Idaho forward Jared Rodriguez (20) and Eastern Washington guard Jacob Davison (10) battle for a rebound in the first half of a Big Sky Conference game last season at Cowan Spectrum in Moscow.

Former Idaho men’s basketball forward Jared Rodriguez, and guards Geno West and RayQuawndis Mitchell have found landing spots after recently inputting their names into the NCAA’s transfer portal.

Rodriguez is heading to San Diego, per a Verbal Commits report from Saturday; West will play at Division II Concordia (Ore.) and Mitchell has signed with Otero Junior College (Colo.), according to Verbal Commits tweets from late last week and Sunday, respectively.

Four other Vandals declared their intentions to transfer following UI’s 2018-19 season, in which it went 5-27.

Guard Cameron Tyson signed with Houston and guard Xavier Smith is headed to Central Washington. Forward Cassius Smits-Francisco and guard Losini Kamara have yet to announce their destinations, although Kamara was offered by D-II Missouri Southern State, according to his Twitter.

Mitchell and Rodriguez were the latest to declare transfer. They each posted their intentions on Twitter in the days following the controversial firing of head coach Don Verlin.

Under interim coach Zac Claus — who the school announced would take coaching duties in 2019-20 — the Vandals will have to replace 50 percent of their roster. The search for a new boss will begin next spring.
