PULLMAN — About halfway through their season opener, the Lewis-Clark Twins faced a bases-loaded situation from the Palouse Patriots when the Twins’ Jose Barajas made a diving, backhanded play to induce an out.

“And that just switched us back (into control),” Twins coach Kevin Maurer said of Barajas’ play in the fourth.

Twins pitcher Dalton Hart went the distance — scatttering four hits and giving up just three earned runs — and the Lewis-Clark Twins beat the Patriots 10-5 on Wednesday.

The Twins got two RBI apiece from Dawson Bonfield, DJ Ricard and Mason Daniel.

“They didn’t have any wasted at-bats,” Maurer said of his team, which jumped out to a seven-run lead over the first two frames. “They had a really tough mindset in the batter’s box. ... And overall, our offense did a wonderful job.”

So did Hart, who took just 10 pitches to finish within his pitch count (105 allowed for a game) entering the final inning. After walking the Patriots’ lead-off man to begin the seventh, Hart induced a double play and then a flyout to end the contest.

“When you’ve got a pitcher with a mindset like that,” Maurer said of Hart, whom he called aggressive, “it always gives you a great opportunity to win. Especially if your defense is playing well.”

The Patriots (2-1) got RBI from Payton Kallaher and Nate Akesson.
