The Idaho Supreme Court decided o dismiss a petition to vacate a Latah County Court’s gag order regarding the Moscow quadruple homicide case. A coalition of media companies, including the Lewiston Tribune and the Moscow-Pullman Daily News, went to the Idaho Supreme Court to push back against a gag order signed by Latah County Magistrate Judge Megan Marshall that prohibits law enforcement and attorneys from speaking publicly about the case of suspect Bryan Kohberger. Kohberger faces four counts of first-degree murder and one count of burglary in the November stabbing deaths of University of Idaho students Kaylee Goncalves, Madison Mogen, Xana Kernodle and Ethan Chapin. Kohberger remains in Latah County Jail as he awaits his June 26 preliminary hearing. … Fox News on Monday ousted prime-time host Tucker Carlson, whose stew of grievances and political theories about Russia and the Jan. 6 insurrection had grown to define the network in recent years and make him an influential force in GOP politics.

About eight months after being fired as athletic director at the University of Idaho, Rob Spear has a new job that will keep him in the Gem State. Spear has been hired as the executive director of the Idaho Falls Auditorium District, the district announced. According to the Idaho Statesman newspaper, the auditorium district was created by Idaho Falls voters in 2011 with the goal of building a multi-purpose event center. The groundbreaking of the $62 million facility is slated for August, with a projected opening in the winter of 2020-21. The capacity will be 4,000 to 6,000. … Local law enforcement agencies are assisting a shorthanded Whitman County Sheriff’s Office this week as staff travel across the state to pay respects to a former deputy who was killed in the line of duty. Sheriff Brett Myers said in a press release his office will have a limited number of staff responding to calls as deputies drive to Cowlitz County and Portland for Cowlitz County Deputy Justin DeRosier’s memorial service. DeRosier was shot and killed near Kalama, Wash., after he stopped to examine a motorhome that was blocking the road. The shooting was the first line-of-duty killing of a deputy in the agency’s history.

University of Idaho students took a moment to stop and thank people on campus whose efforts can often be unrecognized — the faculty and staff. “I realized we don’t really thank our teachers,” said senior Lauren Sanders. “A lot of faculty have really touched my life here and have shown me gifts I didn’t even realize I had. I don’t know where I would be without them right now.” … Hate is easy, but it takes courage to show love. That’s one of the lessons Jeannie Smith presented to Garfield-Palouse students after she shared with them the experiences of her mother, Irene Gut Opdyke, a Polish woman who risked her life to save Jews during the Holocaust. Like her mother did after coming to the U.S. following the war, Smith travels around the country to speak to groups about Opdyke’s experiences. Opdyke also wrote a book, “In My Hands — Memories of a Holocaust Rescuer,” which has been made into a Broadway play.
