The start of this school year brought a pleasant surprise for a Moscow mother who has appreciated the effort from a pair of school district employees who have greeted her daughter each day in Nimipuutimt, the language of the Nez Perce Tribe. Gia Paul, the mother of a third-grader attending Moscow’s McDonald Elementary School, was filled with joy this fall when she first heard her daughter’s school bus driver, Ken Nuhn, and student aide, Jay Dearien, welcome and bid farewell to her daughter, Laren, in Nimipuutimt. ... When 25-year-old Matthew Sutherland, a Democrat, decided to run for state representative in Washington’s 9th Legislative District, it was clear it would be an uphill battle. After all, a Democrat hasn’t been elected to the Pos. 2 seat since 1937. Facing off against longtime Republican incumbent Joe Schmick, R-Colfax, in a historically red district, Josh Maasberg, Sutherland’s campaign manager, said the two most common problems people tend to have with the campaign is party affiliation and Sutherland’s age. ... Coats, an associate professor in the College of Engineering, and a team of student researchers are producing biodegradable plastic from an unlikely source: cow manure. “It has significant potential,” Coats said of their work. “We use a lot of plastic, and it would be great to be producing a type of plastic that’s biodegradable and people would be a lot more comfortable recycling.” ... The death of 97-year-old Ruth Vanderwall has marked the end of an era, said friends and devotees, just months after the death of her husband, Dean. “But there will always be stories and pictures and memories, and they will live on,” said Elena Panchenko, choir director at St. James’ Episcopal Church, where Ruth sang for more than 30 years. The Vanderwalls were known for their efforts in forming the Washington-Idaho Symphony, the Friends of Music Chorale, the Idaho-Washington Concert Chorale — now the Palouse Chorale Society — and their devotion to the Kenworthy Performing Arts Centre.
