2022 One year ago

A large crowd marched to Moscow’s East City Park to learn more about — and rally against — the far-reaching implications of Idaho’s No Public Funds for Abortion Act. The event was organized by Bans Off Moscow and featured speakers that provided perspective on how Idaho’s new abortion law affects those that can get pregnant, physicians and the University of Idaho community. There was also a call to vote in the upcoming election. Martha Smith, a UI student, spoke about the confusion and fear felt among UI students and faculty. ... The first Black female, full-time faculty member of WWAMI Medical School at the University of Idaho was named one of 50 women of the year by a Boise-based publication. Lynda Freeman is a clinical associate professor and academic skills specialist for Idaho WWAMI, where she has worked since 2015. Idaho WWAMI is part of the University of Washington School of Medicine’s cooperative five-state medical school that serves Washington, Wyoming, Alaska, Montana and Idaho.

A wizard donning a pointy hat, gray robe and a long white beard dazzled about 40 University of Idaho students, children and adults with multiple magical chemistry demonstrations at the UI Shattuck Arboretum Amphitheater in Moscow. The demonstrations were part of the 40th anniversary celebration of UI’s fire ecology and management program, one of the oldest wildfire education and science programs of its kind in the country. Garon Smith, or G. Wiz, an emeritus professor of chemistry at the University of Montana, poured a powerful white powder called benzoyl peroxide in the top of a small model volcano and ignited the fuel with a match. ... Washington State University President Kirk Schulz has proclaimed the second Monday in October - commonly known as Columbus Day - as Indigenous Peoples Day. The proclamation recently signed by Schulz changes the name of the holiday on all of the university branch campuses. Schulz said the change recognizes and celebrates the contributions of Native Americans. Moscow became the first city in Idaho to adopt the name change last year. The Pullman City Council passed a similar resolution last week, however, rather than replacing Columbus Day, the city chose to recognize the day also as Indigenous Peoples Day.

Whitman County will be well-represented in the upcoming Miss Washington USA 2014 pageant. Emma Baker, who won the Miss California Teen USA title in 2010, will be competing in the pageant on behalf of the region as Miss Whitman County USA. The Miss Washington USA pageant, which consists of individual evening gown, swimsuit and onstage question portions, is the state-level competition from which the winner goes to compete in the national Miss USA pageant. ... More than 100 people paid their respects to former Washington State University President Dr. Glenn Terrell during a celebration of life ceremony. Terrell was 93 when he died Aug. 30. The ceremony was held at Terrell Library, one of two WSU buildings named after the president of 18 years. Students walking to and from classes through the library would stop to observe the proceedings as former WSU presidents, students and regents spoke to the crowd about fond memories of Terrell, who served as president from 1967 to 1985.
