Students and the public alike were asked to focus on healing from the past and working to create a welcoming community for the future at the National Day of Racial Healing at Washington State University. The event kicked off with an open ceremony held via Zoom. Vice Provost Zoe Higheagle Strong gave the land acknowledgement and said she was glad for the day, adding that she hopes students would get involved in the day’s activities and take the National Day or Racial Healing pledge. During the event, students had the chance to attend a drum circle at the Terrell Library Atrium and an open-mic poetry slam. They could also help paint the Healing Wall at the Compton Union Building. ... Moscow Mountain could have a new 2-mile system of bike trails in two years thanks to a local volunteer group and a decision from the Moscow City Council. The Moscow Area Mountain Bike Association is proposing to build and maintain the trail system on the mountain near the intersection of Moscow Mountain Road and Rock Creek Road. MAMBA is a local nonprofit organization founded in 1997 that develops, maintains and promotes the use of more than 60 miles of non-motorized trails on and around the Moscow Mountain area.

When Plummer teacher Laura Wommack returned from a trip from Qatar and Oman earlier this month, she asked a group of eighth-grade students to list what they thought might be the countries’ chief exports. Their answer: terrorism. Wommack, who lives in Moscow, said when she first began telling people about the trip, which came thanks to a teaching fellowship through the Qatar Foundation intended to promote cultural awareness, she was often met with skepticism and concern for her safety. ... The Pullman Shopko will close for good April 15. According to a news release from Shopko Stores Operating Co. LLC, which owns and operates Shopko, Shopko Hometown and Shopko Express stores, the company has filed for a court-supervised financial restructuring under Chapter 11 of the United States Bankruptcy Code. As a result of the bankruptcy filing and restructuring, a total of 105 stores are expected to close.

The University of Idaho warmly welcomed Thomas “Les” Purce on as the keynote speaker to begin Martin Luther King Jr. week and Black History Month. Purce spoke of his personal journey, the barriers of growing up an African American and the hopes he has for the youth of America. This year marks the 50th anniversary of King’s “I Have a Dream” speech. ... A northern hawk owl wintering at Moscow and thrilling bird watchers from near and far has been injured. Terry Gray, an avid birder who has been keeping tabs on the owl and emailing updates to fellow birdwatchers, said he was called about 4 p.m. by someone who found it lying in Mountain View Road near Heron’s Hideout Park. When approached, it flew about 40 feet and tried to land in a tree, but was unable to balance on a limb and fell to the ground. Gray said the owl was quickly captured. He speculated it may have been hit by a car while hunting.
