The Idaho football team will play its first playoff game in 27 years against Southeastern Louisiana at Strawberry Stadium in Hammond, La. Although it’s been almost three decades since the Vandals have played meaningful football (with the exception of three bowl games in the Football Bowl Subdivision), this game against the Lions feels like a step back in time. Granted, the way Idaho learned its playoff fate this season included more showmanship. In 1995, the Vandals had to wait until the next day’s newspaper. ... It takes a village. Palouse Cares has been spreading compassion to rural towns in the region for nearly 16 years, but the nonprofit’s large effects wouldn’t be possible without its many volunteers. The organization will have its annual food drive, going door to door in Moscow and Pullman to collect nonperishables and donations. Community members can leave their contributions outside their door, or drop off items at Zeppoz or Real Life Church in Pullman. Rick Minard, founder of Palouse Cares, said the December food drive is one of the biggest in the area.

Cougar pride took a hit following the Apple Cup loss at the hands of rival University of Washington, but local fans and those visiting from afar agree it’s still been an incredible season. Cindy Johnson and Shirley Sandoval, both Washington State University employees and Cougar fans, said the team’s two major barriers were hype and the dense, damp snow that began to fall soon after kickoff. ... Small shops made big business this weekend as local consumers turned out for Small Business Saturday, bolstering retail traffic along Moscow and Pullman’s downtown corridors. The organization Buy Local Moscow spearheaded efforts to promote the event on the Idaho side of the border, offering shoppers a punch card that could be marked at participating stores to win modest rewards and a chance at the grand prize — an assemblage of gift cards and goods donated by local businesses.

The mood at the University of Idaho has been a bit sour this week, as students accept that their football team is almost assured to suffer another beatdown. The struggling Vandals will take on the No. 2 Florida State Seminoles — a team fresh off consecutive 59-3 wins and led by quarterback Jameis Winston, one of the frontrunners for the Heisman Trophy. While Idaho is practically guaranteed a trip behind the woodshed, the university will at least come home with a $950,000 paycheck — not that it makes students feel any better. ... Haley Emery is nothing short of a hero. She may not fly around in a colorful Spandex uniform or be able to save an airplane from crashing into a baseball field, but the 25-year-old Whitcom 911 dispatcher does help people every day at work. And in October, Emery’s diligence and persistence with a medical 911 call saved a woman’s life. At 11:44 a.m. Oct. 22, Emery answered a cell phone 911 call from a woman who was struggling to breathe. All she heard was someone breathing heavily into the phone, something many pranksters might do in a fake 911 call, but almost immediately Emery’s gut instincts kicked in.
