Rod Stewart and the Bee Gees topped the Billboard Hot 100 charts the last time there was a total eclipse of the sun visible across the contiguous United States. It was 1979; branded the last eclipse of its kind for the century. It swept through the Pacific Northwest, Montana, North Dakota and parts of Canada, not to be seen again until the next millennium. ... Andrew Crapuchettes, who is a parish elder at Christ Church, former trustee at New Saint Andrews College and the CEO of EMSI, plans to buy the 46,220-square-foot Jackson Street Silos property located southwest of the Sixth and Jackson streets intersection in Moscow. Brenda von Wandruszka, a Realtor at Gail Byers Real Estate in Moscow, declined to say how much the property is selling for, but the sale is expected to close Aug. 23.

A Canadian-based mining company has submitted an application to construct and operate an open-pit mine in the Moose Creek area near Bovill. Roger Kauffman, CEO of iMinerals Inc., said the company is seeking a 20-year permit from the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers that would allow it to divert waterways and discharge fill material into wetlands while mining quartz and feldspar. ... Washington State will have one current and four former student athletes competing at the 2008 Olympic Games in Beijing, China. Three Washington State alumni will compete for the United States in track and field.

Moscow School Board and Moscow Education Association negotiators say they are "disappointed" talks stalled Monday after both sides stuck to original proposals for teacher raises. "We went in with high hopes" and plans to work together, said MEA negotiator Steve Norton. ... Country megastar Garth Brooks doesn't need to do good deeds to win fans or the public's adoration. But that doesn't mean he doesn't do them. When Brooks was in town for two sold-out concerts last weekend, he visited with a Tonasket girl who has cerebral palsy and then bought her family a new van.
