The grand opening of Pullman's newest pot shop wasn't so grand last week when the two-day-old retailer was caught in a sting operation allegedly selling marijuana to a minor. Thad Stenlund, manager of Satori Pullman, said the company has not yet decided how to handle the ticket. ... Mismanagement of weeds along the Pullman-Moscow highway in Whitman County may be killing what little remains of the Palouse Prairie. Richard Old noticed this past week that someone had sprayed herbicide on broadleaf plants native to the Palouse Prairie and left the real weeds to prosper along the highway right of way.

For the second time, a Whitman County judge has ordered the large, multinational Scotts Company to pay millions to a small Tekoa bluegrass processor. In granting Seeds Inc.'s counter-motion for summary judgment, Superior Court Judge David Frazier found that Scotts was contractually bound to pay a 20-cents-per-pound bonus to dozens of farmers for the 2009 and 2010 growing years, said Seeds' Pullman attorney Tim Esser. ... After almost five years of continuous efforts to clean up and reintegrate a contaminated brownfield site in Palouse, Mayor Michael Echanove said now "is the fun part."

Moscow police officer Lee Newbill was shot and killed and Latah County sheriff's deputy Brannon Jordan and a civilian were wounded during a shooting that began Saturday night and ended Sunday morning in Moscow. ... It was a small gesture, but if you listen to Kendrick coach Kevin Driskill, a very indicative one. Ben Warner had a two-hit shutout going in Kendrick's 12-0 Idaho Class 1A State championship win over Genesee on Saturday and the pitcher asked to be taken out after four innings. Warner wanted senior Rex Ireland to throw the final inning of his prep baseball career.

Damaged and stolen property has been found in several Whitman County towns as the sheriff's department continues to investigate a group of teenagers believed to be responsible for a string of crimes, including car thefts, burglaries, car prowls and vandalism over the past six weeks. ... Two University of Idaho faculty groups are telling the university's president they are upset about the way tenure and promotion issues have been handled this year. And they plan to see that tenure and promotion decisions are made differently next year.
