2016 One year ago today

The Moscow Public Library should have a fresh look by the time July rolls around. A roughly $37,000 project underway is focusing on the original Carnegie Library building, which makes up the southside portion of the library on the corner of Second and Jefferson streets. ... Lola Clyde and Milton Arthur parks' conceptual designs were adopted in April, but Moscow doesn't have the funds to start development. "We're competing against a lot of things for that money," Dwight Curtis, parks and recreation director, said. The total project cost for Lola Clyde Park is $2.2 million and Milton Arthur's total is projected to be $1.6 million.

Police and firefighters continue to investigate the cause of two fires four days apart on the Washington State University campus that they believe to be the work of an arsonist. ... Walter Steed announced Saturday that he was retained as chairman of the Republican Party in Latah County during a meeting last week. Other offices elected, he said, were Thomas Lawford, vice chairman; Mary Steed, secretary; Peggy Gottschalk, treasurer; Al Baker, state committeeman; Madeline McComas, state committeewoman; Dennis Ownbey, precinct committee representative; and Lauren McConnell, youth committee person.

2007 10 years ago today

A Potlatch resident was located this morning after he failed to return home from a walk Sunday. The 61-year-old was last seen at 4:30 p.m. when he left his home for a walk with his dog. He was reported missing at 11 p.m. when his dog returned home, but he did not. Latah County Sheriff's Office Deputy Ryan Weaver said the man was located at about 9:50 a.m. ... A project to reconstruct a traffic island at the intersection of Grand Avenue and Davis Way in Pullman will be completed ahead of schedule. The project, which was identified as a City Council goal in 2006, will include asphalt patches to the body of the island, concrete pavers and curbs.

Moscow attorney William Thompson beat the heavily favored public defender Tuesday in the Democratic primary and will challenge Republican Doug Whitney to be Latah County's next prosecutor. Thompson nabbed 1,339 of the 2,261 votes, or 60 percent, to beat Michael Henegen's 922 votes. ... Problems with juveniles have hit a crisis point in Whitman County, and authorities say the county must come up with innovative ways to increase staff and services for children. "We're not treading water, we're drowning," said Jack Lien, Juvenile Services administrator.
