2017 One year ago today

Two current members of city government have announced their bids for seats on the Pullman City Council. Brandon Chapman, a member of the Pullman Board of Adjustment, has announced he will run against presumptive opponent and incumbent Jeff Hawbaker for Ward 3, and Al Sorensen, councilor over Ward 1, has announced he will run for re-election. ... Talk during Thursday's Moscow Urban Renewal Agency meeting once again centered around establishing an urban renewal district on the south end of town. The district could be as large as 650 acres, but roughly half of the land currently being considered falls outside of Moscow's city limits.

2013 Five years ago today

Two schools in the Pullman School District were recently honored with Washington Achievement Awards. Franklin Elementary won an award for excellence in science in the elementary division while Pullman High School won the award for closing achievement gaps in the high school division. ... When humans eventually make their homes away from the Earth, they'll need a sustainable food source. With this future in mind, the University of Idaho Vandal Atmospheric Science Team recently launched its third helium-filled balloon carrying 450 rainbow trout eggs as part of an experiment to see if fish can survive in space.

2008 10 years ago today

Washington State University will welcome parents into the Cougar family this fall with tours and mini-courses designed to introduce them to the institution. Program organizers also hope to keep parents "out of their kids' hair," do some strategic marketing and hopefully court their financial allegiance. ... University of Idaho Vice President for Finance and Administration Lloyd Mues said it will be "a challenge" to cover costs with the less-than-anticipated student-fee increase approved by the Idaho State Board of Education. The UI requested a 7.9-percent fee increase, but instead was granted a 5-percent increase.

1993 25 years ago today

The University of Idaho student president believes the state's educational residency law may be unconstitutional. The law, which was effective Jan. 15, has upset many students who now cannot become Idaho residents and pay the lower resident fees at the UI. ... Construction on Pullman's 84-room Holiday Inn Express is expected to start within the next two weeks. If all goes well, the facility could be up and running on the corner of Bishop Boulevard and Klemgard Avenue by the end of September.
