The city of Moscow has received two appeals of the Moscow Board of Adjustment's July 18 decision to approve a conditional use permit that would allow New Saint Andrews College to expand into the former Cadillac Jack's building on North Main Street. City Attorney Rod Hall said the city is researching the validity of the appeals. ... A city councilman and a school director in Pullman and the mayor of Garfield received support to move to the November election when the votes were counted in Washington's primary election Tuesday, according to initial results from the Whitman County auditor's office. The ballots of about 15 percent of Whitman County's 17,367 registered voters were counted.

Sideshow artist and Moscow resident Brad Byers was sent home on Wednesday night's episode of "America's Got Talent." Byers advanced all the way to quarterfinals and did such acts as swallowing nine swords and twisting them, pulling "AGT" host Nick Cannon and Byers' fiancee on a cart by a hook through his nose, and on Tuesday, laying down on a bed of nails while his brother drove an ATV over a track set on Byers' chest. ... Twenty talented young women from around Washington state, along with one national champion, met for lunch Thursday with members of Pullman's Chamber of Commerce at Beasley Coliseum's Cougar Lounge.

Pullman once boasted "the largest and purest supply of water to be found in any town on the coast." The advertisement from the early 20th century touted the young city's artesian wells as the only such wells in the state. There were seven wells in all, with some pushing out more than 1,000 gallons a minute, and "no question of getting others at a depth of less than 100 feet." ... Washington State University officials showed off the Palouse Ridge Golf Club to members of the media Friday - one month in advance of the course's scheduled Aug. 29 grand opening.

Dona K. Thompson takes over as interim director of Multicultural Student Services at Washington State University beginning today. She replaces Stephen Sneed, who departed last week to become associate dean of student affairs at Williams College in Massachusetts. ... The University of Idaho is the hub for the state's participation in national research involving Head Start, a federal preschool program for poor children. The UI and five Idaho Head Start programs are tracking success rate of children from kindergarten through third grade.
