Jim Logan was cleaning out a commercial vendor building and office attic space this spring when he came across some old record books. As it turned out, the director of Latah County Fairgrounds and Event Center had found 4-H Latah County record books ranging from 1948 to 1955. ... The Daily News delivered a cashier's check for $350.93 to the University of Idaho on Tuesday in prepayment for a UI search for any emails and documents involving the campus veterinarian and feral cats. The UI demanded the money before it would look for emails and documents, despite a state law that says it can't charge a fee.

At the Washington State University Creamery, one employee is a slice above the rest now that he is an American Cheese Society certified cheese professional. Nial Yager, who has worked at the Creamery for 24 years, passed the certification test Aug. 1 in Raleigh, N.C., with the first class of candidates for certification. ... Hundreds of people filled the University of Idaho's Student Union Building ballroom Thursday night for a debate on whether gay rights are antithetical to conservative Christian values. Douglas Wilson, controversial pastor of Christ Church in Moscow, debated R. Clarke Cooper, executive director of Log Cabin Republicans in Washington, D.C.

Sgt. Sam Sorem said police have zeroed in on a male suspect who is believed to be involved in an alleged sexual assault at the Kappa Alpha Theta sorority and break-ins at the Pi Beta Phi and Delta Gamma houses between the hours of 3 a.m. and 5 a.m. ... Moscow police detained four men outside Untamed Art Tattoo parlor Thursday afternoon following a report of a fight involving weapons. Two of the men had been in an argument at the parlor and pointed guns at each other, Moscow Assistant Police Chief David Duke said. While taking the men's statements, however, police determined "no threats of violence or fear was initiated on the part of either one."

Cold, dusty winds strong enough to uproot demonstration booths greeted Palouse Empire Fairgrounds visitors Saturday morning, but they couldn't uproot the fair's success. Total revenues from the ticket gates were up 35 percent over last year. ... They live and breathe Star Trek. They wear wild clothes depicting the far future and recalling the distant past. And they debate the existence of UFOs. They're die-hard science fiction fans, and more than 100 of them were out in full "force" this weekend at the 14th annual MosCon science fiction convention.
