It was a solemn scene Saturday as more than 100 people gathered for a vigil for Washington State University professor David Warner, who suffered head injuries in a beating near campus March 30. The crowd of WSU and community members formed a circle outside the Glenn Terrell Mall. ... Councilors on the Public Works and Finance Committee are entertaining a proposal to pay City Supervisor Gary Riedner an additional $1,000 every two weeks for assuming city attorney responsibilities. The proposal also calls for compensating City Prosecutor Rod Hall with an additional $500 every two weeks for his part.

The Associated Students of the UI senator said he wants students to be proactive with the city. ... David W. Grimes is getting ready to go back to work at Washington State University 35 months after his position was eliminated. Grimes and two other fire officers were laid off by WSU in 2005 and received letters Friday informing them to report to WSU's Human Relations Office for work Monday at 8 a.m.

Most residence hall students will pay about $300 more to live in the University of Idaho dorms next semester, and those who live in campus apartments will pay about $50 more each month. Director of University Residences Roger Oettli met with student leaders Thursday afternoon and explained proposed fee increases. ... The owner of the Bloomfield building that went up in flames in February 1992 has sued the property manager. Ted Beasley, who owned the 102-year-old building, sued Pullman Property Management in Whitman County Superior Court last week.
