2016 One year ago today

Two years and one of the hottest summers on record have passed since Pullman's Reaney Park pool was last open, but come June 10 the pool should be filled with children once again. While the facility was closed, workers added a $737,000 splash pad. ... Sixteen years after Dale Shackelford was convicted of murdering his ex-wife and her boyfriend outside Kendrick, the Idaho Supreme Court denied the imprisoned man's appeals of two life sentences in an opinion issued Friday. Shackelford, 54, was convicted of two counts of first-degree murder in 1999 for shooting Donna Fontaine and Fred Paiahniuk, then setting their bodies on fire in a garage in Kendrick in an attempt to hide the remains.

Latah County commissioners decided Wednesday to try their luck acquiring the U.S. Federal Building in Moscow at public auction, declining the U.S. General Services Administration's asking price of $1.9 million - an offer that comes off the table today. ... School attendance is likely to become a higher priority for high school students next year if the Pullman School Board approves a policy change allowing excessive absence to result in lower grades. Through the updated policy, which representatives will consider June 13, Pullman administrators would be permitted to establish procedures allowing teachers to consider a student's attendance in determining overall grades.

Noxious weeds are a problem in Latah County and the Palouse in general, and Roger Blanchard and Kristin Graham are out to do something about it. Blanchard, Moscow's parks and facilities manager, and Graham, the city's animal control/weed control officer, said the most common noxious weed in the area is Canada thistle. ... Peter Husmann has been released from Gritman Medical Center, according to a press release issued by the hospital Wednesday. The 20-year-old University of Idaho student was transported to Gritman on May 19 after being shot three times while trying to provide assistance to police during a shooting spree by Jason Hamilton.

Just seven months before he was fired as manager of Environmental Health Services, Russ Schaff's supervisor recommended him for promotion, according to Washington State University personnel records obtained under the Freedom of Information Act. ... Only one of the seven men accused of gang raping a woman in Pullman more than three months ago has been charged with a crime, and he pleaded guilty to a reduced charge. None of the six adults, even the ones who allegedly tried to rape the woman with a beer bottle, have been charged.
