The Colfax Municipal Pool will be closed this year for extensive repairs.

This is the first major rebuild of the pool, City of Colfax Public Works Director Matt Hammer said. He added it hasn’t had a renovation to this degree since it was built in 1968.

It’s been relatively untouched, he added. The extent of work includes mechanical room upgrades to its filter and disinfection system that was performed last year. Other than that, Hammer said, only minor repairs have been carried out.

“We’re doing quite a bit,” Hammer said.

The pool will receive new fill and drain lines, a liner replacement and an improved deck and gutter system. Hammer said the pool house will also be renovated, including an ADA restroom.

Hammer said the pool has needed repairs for quite some time now. It became more apparent when the pool began to leak a significant amount of water, he added.

The renovation is estimated to cost a little over $2 million, according to Hammer. The rebuild was financed by grants and funds provided by the Washington Legislature.

The pool is essential to the community and its youth, he said. It’s the only entertainment for kids in town other than Colfax’s parks, Hammer added.

“This will be great for the community,” Hammer said. “We’re hoping it brings some people into town when it’s finished.”

The outdoor pool normally operates during the summer months. The renovation will close the pool, Hammer said work is expected to be complete before next year’s season.

He added the rebuild will give the pool a second life, which will make the space accessible for years to come.
