The INKster finally ran down Moscow Mayor Nancy Chaney on Thursday afternoon for a brief visit about her bid for the mayor's slot again. She was on her way to a meeting, so our conversation was short, with hopefully more to share in the coming weeks.

Nancy served on the Moscow City Council for two years and as mayor for the past eight years. She has named Kenton Bird as her treasurer. Kenton is director of the School of Journalism and Mass Media at the University of Idaho and has lived in and around Moscow for many years.

The only question the INKster had time to ask Nancy was what she feels is the biggest challenge facing the city, and she replied, "community development" but did not have time to elaborate. Hopefully, we'll have more from her soon.

Here is Vicki Leeper's list of 10 things to do for $10 or less in September.

"For sure, I am taking my son to the Palouse Empire Threshing Bee," the tourism director of the Pullman Chamber of Commerce wrote. "I don't know that he has ever seen a draft horse up close and personal."

  • Get a history lesson on antique harvesting Monday. See the Palouse Empire Threshing Bee at the Colfax Fairgrounds. http://www.visitcolfax.com
  • Pet the goats at the Palouse Empire Fair. While you are there, take in the hypnotist show. Cost for adults is $6. http://www.palouseempirefair.org
  • Get a peek at the stars at the Jazz Barbecue Star Party on Sept. 7 at Jewett Observatory. Suggested donation is $7. Clouds render all objects invisible - so don't come if you don't see stars.
  • Cheer on the Cougs at the First Down Friday Pep Rally from 5-9 p.m. Sept. 13 in downtown Pullman. A free community event for the whole family. http://www.pullmanchamber.com
  • Start a Book Club in a Bag. Neill Public Library has kits with everything you need and more than 40 book choices. Just add nine friends. http://www.neill-lib.org
  • Take the kids to Palouse Days on Sept. 14 for the Ping Pong Ball Drop. Catch a winner, and trade it for a prize. http://www.visitpalouse.com
  • Take in the crisp fall air with a bike ride or walk on Moscow Mountain. There are several trails with great views everywhere.
  • Play "Name That Antique" at the Old Fashioned Sunday on Sept. 15 at the Dahmen Barn. It's free and fun for the whole family. http://www.artisanbarn.org
  • Buy yourself a bouquet of flowers at the Pullman Farmers Market from 3:30-6 p.m. Wednesdays.
  • Pick up a Lentil Festival Cookbook for $5 at the Pullman Chamber office. Make a prize-winning recipe and see if you agree with the judges. http://www.lentilfest.com/shop.
