Pullman school employees earn teacher, classified staff awards

A pair of Pullman School District employees have been named teacher and classified employee of year by Northeast Washington Educational Service District 101.

The regional teacher of the year is Madison Dissmore, a sixth-grade math teacher at Lincoln Middle School. The classified school employee of the year is Sunnyside Elementary School office manager Carmen Roberts.

Dissmore has taught at Lincoln Middle School for nine years and earned a master’s degree in curriculum and instruction with a focus on equity in math instruction. She is the club adviser for the chess club, Magic the Gathering club and the gender and sexuality alliance club. Dissmore is working on her principal credentials and began an administrative internship last July.

Roberts has been the office manager and head secretary at Sunnyside for the past decade. She has served on district committees like the social committee, positive behavior intervention team and as the president of the secretary bargaining unit. Roberts has also worked as a paraeducator at Franklin Elementary School and Pullman High School.

Awards announced for 2023 Palouse Plein Air exhibition

The city of Moscow and Moscow Arts Commission have announced the award winners for the Palouse Plein Air exhibition, which is on display until Friday at the Third Street Gallery, 206 E. Third St., Moscow. There were 104 artworks submitted from 40 artists for the exhibit.

The first place winner was Ramie Erickson for her piece, “Wheat Fields of Kamiak.” Placing second was “Fall Color,” by Tom Groesbeck. Placing third was “Fair” by Tim Cawley.

The Best Palouse award went to “Steptoe Butte Late Afternoon,” by Val Pate. Best Downtown award went to “Riverview,” by Sydney Speck. The Best Historical award was won by “David’s Deconstruction,” by Jamie Sugai. KJ Elmose won the Best Lil’ Painting award for “little angels.”

The student awards were given to Kelsey Harrington and Olivia Pham. The honorable mention award winners were Paige Shumway and Marcelle Moe.

The city will purchase the paintings of Ashleigh Streiff, Rose Graham, and two from Daryl Baird.

The gallery is open from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Fridays.

Moscow Water Reclamation facility receives gold star rating

The Moscow Water Reclamation Facility received a gold star rating from the Idaho Conservation League in the Idaho Wastewater Treatment Plant Report. The report covers the 119 municipal wastewater treatment facilities in Idaho and can be viewed online at bit.ly/3rAKhyf.

The city of Moscow plant was one of 51 facilities which reported no violations in 2022. The city of Moscow was one of 31 who reported no violations in 2021 and 2022. In 2022, 51 of the 119 facilities reported no violations and 68 reported at least one violation.

2023 Washington Digital Heritage grant announced

The 2023 Washington Digital Heritage grants have been announced and two programs on the Palouse were among the recipients.

Washington State University’s LGBTQ Center was awarded a grant of $14,989 for digitizing items and conducting oral histories related to LGBT history across the Palouse. A $13,845 grant was awarded to the Whitman County Library district to digitize 350 items from the Whitman County Historical Society.

The grants were awarded by the Office of the Secretary of State, Washington State Library Division, and are funded by the Library Services and Technology Act through the Institute of Museum and Library Services.
