2022 One year ago

Many of those in attendance at Monday’s Moscow City Council meeting applauded as the council adopted the city’s Climate Action Plan. The plan is a guiding document to help city government operations reach net zero emissions by 2035. The council and deputy city supervisor, Tyler Palmer, emphasized that this plan contains no mandatory programs for residents. It only applies to city government operations, though Mayor Art Bettge said he hopes that the community uses it as an example to minimize its effect on the climate. He said the city government produces only 2.4% of the total emissions in the community. ... Washington State Superintendent Chris Reykdal will discuss policies and the budget to improve education in K-12 public schools statewide in a briefing. Reykdal will expand on a proposal for the legislature to provide equal access to dual credit opportunities in secondary education with no additional cost to students or their family, according to a news release. Dual credit, according to the release, is a program in which students may earn college or high school credits synchronously.

Minimum wage and Medicaid expansion were two topics Idaho 5th District Legislative candidates addressed during a candidate forum at the Good Samaritan Society, Moscow Village. District 5A State Rep. candidates Margaret Gannon, D-St. Maries, and Bill Goesling, R-Moscow; 5B State Rep. candidates Caroline Nilsson Troy, R-Genesee, and Laurene Sorensen, D-Moscow; and Idaho Senate candidates Dan Foreman, R-Viola, and David Nelson, D-Moscow, attended the forum. Idaho follows the federal minimum wage standard of $7.25 per hour, and some residents feel it needs to be increased, especially in a district that borders Washington, where workers earn no less than $11.50 an hour. ... Pullman Regional Hospital took the next step forward in proposing plans for a $40 million, 45,000-square-foot health pavilion that would provide one-stop care for hospital patients. During the hospital’s regular board meeting, a hearing was held to allow public comment on the hospital’s proposed $27 million to $30 million bond to fund the health pavilion.

The Idaho League of Women Voters State Board discussed tax policy, membership and more during its quarterly meeting in the Janet Fiske Room in the 1912 Center in Moscow. Nine women, representing leagues or members-at-large from around the state, discussed their stance on various issues, including the results of the board’s Tax Structure Policy Committee study. ... Anne Veseth will be honored at the 32nd Annual National Fallen Firefighters Memorial at the National Fire Academy in Emmitsburg, Md., along with 80 other firefighters who died in the line of duty. They include two Idaho firefighters who died in 2012 and eight from previous years. Veseth, 20, of the U.S. Forest Service, Nez Perce-Clearwater National Forests, died after being struck by a tree while fighting a wildfire on Aug. 12, 2012. The names of those firefighters who died in the line of duty will be added to the National Fallen Firefighters Memorial on the Academy grounds.
