Since July of this year, people experiencing a mental health crisis have been urged to call 988. When they reach it, an automated message greets them: “You’ve reached the 988 suicide and crisis lifeline,” it says. “We are here to help.” Callers are prompted to press two for Spanish, one for Veterans and service members and, three to access support for LGBTQ+ people younger than 25 — or wait on the line while their call is routed to a crisis counselor. On average, it’ll take a little less than 40 seconds. ... The Pullman Public Works Department proposed the Arterial Streets fund increase of 2,022% in the 2023 budget at Pullman City Council’s second biennial budget workshop — though the department assured councilors this increase will be aided by several grants. City officials presented budget requests to the 2023-2024 Mayor’s Proposed Budget, but councilors did not make any decisions on these requests.

John Wilkerson, a professor in the University of Washington Department of Political Science, gave his opinion on the midterms to a crowd of more than 50 in an event organized by The Foley Institute. “This election really was a referendum on Donald Trump,” Wilkerson said. He said views on Trump influenced the results more than views on the economy or other issues, which helped Democrats in some ways as the party won the House and elected Democratic governors in historically conservative states like Wisconsin and Kansas. But Wilkerson said Trump’s active role in rallying his base salvaged wins for the Republicans, which gained two more seats in the Senate.

Though he didn’t realize it until a year ago, Colfax resident James Fitzgerald had everything he needed to begin making acoustic guitars, even if experience wasn’t one of them. The 68-year-old woodworker, artist and former dentist had acquired all the necessary skills during the course of his life. “My story is a story of what I call the transference of skills,” he said. “The more skills that you have that you carry with you, sometimes they just pop up to help you.” A year later, Fitzgerald has churned out a dozen finished guitars out of his shop. ... For Pat Yarber, what was once just a dream will today turn into a reality. When he opens the doors to the Kibbie Dome and watches the opening kickoff sail by, he will have completed a journey more than 30 years in the making. Today’s game marks the 125th Football Bowl Subdivision stadium visited by Yarber — making him perhaps the only person in history to see a game at every major Division 1 school.
