Retirements, redistricting and a slew of unsuccessful reelection bids will result in a nearly 50% turnover in the Idaho Legislature next session. Based on the general election results, 20 of 35 seats in the Idaho Senate in 2023 will be occupied by people who weren’t there during the 2022 session. Similarly, 31 of 70 House seats will have new representatives. Overall, 51 of the 105 legislative seats will be occupied by new members. ... One of the major factors that brought Colorado native Seth Bowen to the University of Idaho is Moscow’s close proximity to good skiing. “It definitely was a big draw for me,” the senior said. Bowen and many other like-minded skiing enthusiasts were brought together for the annual Outdoor Equipment Sale and Ski Swap at the UI Student Recreation Center. Bowen, who is president of the university’s ski club, said the ski swap has “an amazing history” and is an event people look forward to every year. Jerry McMurty, the coach of the ski club, said it is the only ski swap on the Palouse. “This one’s unique in that it’s not just shops, it’s individuals that can bring in the gear they want to sell,” he said.

Washington State University President Kirk Schulz and Pullman Regional Hospital CEO Scott Adams signed a memorandum of understanding promising a collaboration that will help medical school graduates complete their residency. “The purpose of this MOU is to provide a foundation and framework for increased collaboration, cooperation and interaction between the Parties,” the MOU states. ... It’s been 200 years since the birth of renowned abolitionist Frederick Douglass, and in honor of this bicentennial, the Frederick Douglass Family Initiative released a list of 200 honorees who best embody the work and spirit of the man. One happens to reside right here on the Palouse. The list includes the likes of former U.S. President Barack Obama, NBA star and philanthropist LeBron James, MIT linguist and intellectual Noam Chomsky and, toward the middle of the list, just above Bruce Springsteen, Moscow teacher Rebekka Boysen-Taylor.

Kelsey Craft was a 22-year-old University of Idaho senior in a financial bind when she asked her mother to put her high school senior prom dress up for sale to bring in a little cash. But her mother demurred. “She said, ‘what if you want to keep it for something? It’s so pretty. What if you want to be in a pageant?’” Craft did some online research and decided to apply for the upcoming Miss Idaho competition, which awards the winner with prizes and a scholarship. ... In 1971, Ron Fabros was a 20-year-old student athlete at California State University Stanislaus when he was drafted into the Vietnam War. “I was number 24. It was the only time my number was ever picked in a lottery,” he joked at a continental breakfast held in the ballroom of the Compton Union Building in honor of Veterans Day at Washington State University. With a father who served in the Army in World War II and a brother who did three tours as a Marine in Vietnam, he said he was proud to serve when his country called.
