Idaho high school and college students told legislators they want more trade programs, financial aid and student advisers as they embark on their postsecondary education journey. House Speaker Scott Bedke and Reps. Lori McCann, Brandon Mitchell and Caroline Troy attended an education roundtable discussion at the University of Idaho’s D.A. Huckabay M.D. Medical Education Building. Local business leaders also joined the discussion.. ... Hard work paid off after Moscow High School students Samantha Smith, a sophomore, and Simon Salisbury, a junior, both qualified for the National FFA Convention. The National FFA Convention is known for growing the “next generation of leaders” within agriculture, according to its website. The annual event will take place in Indianapolis. Both Smith and Salisbury qualified to compete in the agriscience section of the convention, which is similar to a science fair but revolves around agricultural topics.

Third-graders gathered excitedly around large, raised garden beds, digging their small hands into loose dirt in search of tubers and the occasional earthworm Friday morning just outside McDonald Elementary School in Moscow. While the children were focused on unearthing potatoes, teacher Krysta Swanger said the school’s little plats have been planted with everything from carrots and tomatoes to broccoli and cauliflower. ... Only a handful of people turned out for Moscow’s first ever Repair Café — an event that brings local tinkerers and tailors together to fix the community’s possessions — but organizer Jackie Carter is not discouraged. The inaugural event, hosted by Moscow Public Library, took place in Moscow’s 1912 Center and featured a small collection of tables where locals could bring broken lamps, zippers and other torn or tattered goods for repairs.

Karen Rohn loves old stuff. “Not pristine, immaculate antiques, but rustic things that show their age, especially old buildings.” The Potlatch native takes her inspiration from what she is surrounded by on her daily walks with her dog, always bringing a camera along so she can take pictures of old barns and granaries and rusty bicycles lying in the grass. Rohn uses that inspiration in her painting — canvases covered in dramatic light and dark colors, contrasting images of the rustic old buildings with scenes of nature and birds. ... Washington State University’s Global Campus won the Ralph E. Gomory Award for Quality Online Education from the Sloan Consortium. The award honors the Global Campus for its commitment to assessing and improving the quality of online education through application of five quality pillars: access, learning effectiveness, cost effectiveness, and student and faculty satisfaction.
