Sleigh bells will be heard from doorsteps next week as Santa makes his annual tour through Pullman neighborhoods, handing out candy canes and spreading the holiday spirit. The Pullman Lions Club has asked St. Nicholas to travel down from the North Pole and visit the city’s hills for another year. Les Davies, Pullman Lion’s Club member, said the club made new maps for this year to make sure most kids in Pullman have the opportunity to meet Santa. Pullman is growing, new subdivisions have sprouted and more families are moving to the area. ... Colleen Cochran first started working in the Gritman Medical Center pharmacy in 2014 when she and her husband moved to the Palouse to be closer to their grandchildren in Pullman. The past few years, as the hospital’s pharmacy director, Cochrane and her staff have handled the day-to-day tasks of the pharmacy as well as working to provide more 14,000 vaccines to residents across the Palouse during the COVID-19 pandemic. For her efforts, Cochran was named one of four recipients of an Idaho Rural Health Hero Award for north Idaho. The awards, given by the Idaho Rural Health Association, span the four regions of the state with multiple awardees per region.

Latah County made plans for a fifth county park. About 8 acres of land just north of the Moscow city limits off North Polk Street Extension will likely become a Latah County park thanks to the man who lives on the property. Reo Lloyd, 69, signed a gift deed with reservation of life estate with the county, which means Lloyd offered to donate his 8.34 acres to the county to be used as a park once he dies, said Brad Rudley, Latah County chief civil deputy prosecuting attorney. ... University of Idaho Vice President for Research and Economic Development Janet Nelson was named a 2018 American Association for the Advancement of Science Fellow for her contributions to the field of inorganic chemistry and her national leadership across academia, government and nonprofit organizations. Nelson is the only person this year nominated from an Idaho institution of higher education.

Residents of all ages donated to local nonprofits in the name of their loved ones during the Fifth Annual Alternative Giving Market of the Palouse in the Prichard Art Gallery in Moscow. Established in 2009, the Giving Market provides an annual opportunity for a meaningful alternative to holiday gift giving while simultaneously supporting local nonprofits. Each of the 30 organizations had a table set up around the perimeter of the gallery with information about their financial needs and giving cards to hand out when someone donated. ... Emily Drake probably feels like she is playing for a new team this year. The point guard, who has started each of the last two seasons for Pullman High, is without almost all of her weapons for last year. Instead of running the offense through seniors like Dakota Wicakrd, Anna Guo, Kati Moos, Shayla Robinson, Cierra Paul, Laura Guido and Bre Daugherty, Drake must mesh with new teammates. The seven departed seniors are a big loss for Pullman coach Juston Pollestad, but if there was ever a player he would want to have back from last year’s roster, it would probably be Drake.
