Nearly 90 students from 10 schools in the Idaho panhandle gathered at the Coeur d’Alene Resort Conference Center earlier this month to show off science fair projects they had spent the past few months working on. Caden Perry, a Moscow High School junior, was one of those students and the goal of his project was to see if he could combine the stability of a tricopter with the efficiency of a helicopter on a drone. Perry succeeded. He received the Best in Fair award, the award for Best in Category in Engineering, Math and Computer Science, a Category Gold award and the U.S. Air Force Award. ... Wastewater testing at the University of Idaho, along with partners at Boise State, Idaho State and Lewis-Clark State, is helping to pave the way for a new method of tracking and predicting spikes in COVID-19 cases at a community level. The team at the UI first started its work in 2020, after the city of Moscow requested help to monitor COVID-19 levels in wastewater, said Erik Coats, a professor of environmental engineering and lead for the UI testing program. Now, funding from the CDC’s National Wastewater Surveillance System is expanding those efforts in collaboration with Idaho’s four public colleges and universities.

Latah County GOP Chairman Walter Steed had a clear message for his fellow Republicans — “I am not resigning.” Twelve Latah County Republican precinct committeemen last month passed a vote of no confidence in Steed after he signed a letter to the Legislature as president of the Moscow City Council recommending ways of curbing gun violence should it take up the issue this session. Those rallying for his resignation say he didn’t uphold the party’s values in the Second Amendment. ... Bob Celebrezze is stepping down after 13 years as principal of Moscow High School. The Wenatchee School Board unanimously confirmed Celebrezze’s appointment as Wenatchee High School principal effective July 1. “I’ve been at Moscow High School for 13 years, and I absolutely love the school and the school community,” he said. “I honestly don’t feel like I could’ve been in a better place.”
