2022 One year ago

The University of Idaho’s College of Agricultural and Life Sciences will receive up to $55 million, the largest award in the university’s history, to help Idaho farmers and ranchers combat climate change. The award, from the U.S. Department of Agriculture, is twice as large as any previous UI grant. In addition to supporting research on building cropping systems that are more resilient to climate change, the five-year grant stimulates the state’s economy by paying more than half of the funds directly to Idaho agricultural producers. ... When Tiffany Johnson and Mercedes Huff first met, they were both participating in the Distinguished Young Women’s program state competition. Now, both their daughters are at the same competition. Ayva Johnson, of Moscow, and Annika Huff, of Lewiston, headed down to Idaho Falls to prepare for a week of training for the two-day program scheduled. The Idaho Distinguished Young Women program is part of a national scholarship organization that awarded $30,200 last year in the state.

The sons of former professional athletes, Konner Kinkade and Isaiah Strong, are making their own names for themselves this season — in a big way. The Kinkade-to-Strong, quarterback-to-receiver connection has been the downfall of many an opponent on the Pullman football team’s path to a 4-1 record entering the heart of its season. The Greyhounds’ duo also have a pair of recognizable last names: Konner Kinkade is the son of former Major League Baseball player and Washington State star Mike Kinkade and Isaiah Strong is the son of former National Football League fullback Mack Strong, who played all 14 seasons for the Seattle Seahawks. ... Jefferson Elementary is on track to have a new outdoor learning space by the spring if all goes according to plan. The project, officially dubbed the Jefferson Outdoor Learning Lab, is a collaboration between Jefferson’s parent-teacher association and Washington State University’s landscape architecture program. PTA Fundraising Chair Meg Gollnick said the project will be located in a “U” shaped courtyard between the major wings of the school.

Gritman Medical Center began construction this week on projects that will increase clinical space and make room for new services at the hospital. The $350,000 projects will affect about 1,300 square feet in the hospital and is to be completed in November. The Gritman Outpatient Clinic will move from the first floor just inside the hospital’s south entrance to the Medical-Surgical unit on the second floor, freeing up first floor space for the hospital’s new Wound Healing Center. .... While Amy Warwick only really began working on her skills as a barista a little more than a year ago while running Fonk’s Coffee House in Colfax, she’s been working on the recipes for the other treats she serves there for decades. Warwick started baking with her grandmother, Irene Olson, also a Colfax native, when she was a child. Olson died a few years ago, but left her cookbooks, recipes and a bit of inspiration to Warwick. “She definitely had a lot of influence on me,” Warwick said of her grandmother, whom she said she spent most days with as a child while her mother was at work.
