Former Washington State football coach Nick Rolovich, who was fired Oct. 18, 2021, for refusing to comply with the state mandate that state employees be fully vaccinated for COVID-19, has reportedly filed a lawsuit against Washington State University, Gov. Jay Inslee and WSU athletic director Pat Chun. ESPN’s Kyle Bonagura reported that Rolovich had filed the lawsuit, according to his lawyer, Brian Fahling. ... Just one year ago, Idaho junior transfer linebacker Paul Moala tore his Achilles for the second time in two years as a member of Notre Dame’s football team. Moala’s three years with the Fighting Irish didn’t go as planned. He never started a game, registering just 22 total tackles and a forced fumble. With one regular-season game remaining in his first season as a Vandal, he’s more than doubled his career tackles (52), has two sacks, a forced fumble and four interceptions. “I’ve just adjusted well to the scheme,” Moala said.

University of Idaho undergraduates interested in conducting their own research may not have to wait until graduate school thanks to the international Grand Challenges Scholars Program offered by the National Academy of Engineering. Starting in 2008, UI Grand Challenge Director and Assistant Professor Daniel Robertson said the NAE produced a list of 14 global issues for young engineers to address through research projects at participating universities - though the students were not required to be an aspiring engineer to apply. ... About 25 students were thrown in jail, got fired from their jobs, bartered with a pawn shop owner and tried to survive natural disasters at the Washington State University Compton Union Building. It was all part of a poverty simulation organized by the WSU Center for Civic Engagement to help students better understand the everyday challenges of being poor. It was the second time the CCE organized the event. “It really simulates what it’s like to be in a rough spot and have to make decisions,” said Ben Calabretta, associate director of the CCE.

A consortium of universities, private companies and government agencies are using a $10 million grant from the USDA to learn how to convert beetle-killed trees into biofuel. Scientists from the University of Idaho, University of Montana, Montana State University, the University of Wyoming and Colorado State University are working closely with local governments, the Forest Service’s Rocky Mountain Research Station, the National Renewable Energy Lab and the private Cool Planet Energy Systems. Together they have created BANR, the Bioenergy Alliance Network of the Rockies. ... Linda Pall was given two years to live when she was diagnosed with pulmonary arterial hypertension in 2003. But she had a different plan. The Moscow woman told her doctor she wasn’t leaving the world until Idaho became a truly progressive state. Ten years later, Pall is still working through health complications to accomplish that task. It’s an effort that recently earned her recognition from Gonzaga University. Pall, 68, was named as this year’s recipient of the Eva Lassman Take Action Against Hate Award from Gonzaga. The award’s namesake was a Holocaust survivor who moved to Spokane and lived to be 92 years old.
