Washington State University has landed a $500,000 grant for its nuclear fuel research. The Nuclear Regulatory Commission announced it awarded grants to various universities, including WSU, on Nov. 30. WSU will use the funds for its research proposal on the characterization of fresh and spent nuclear fuel for nuclear power plants, according to an NRC news release. The commission was established in 1974 as an independent agency by Congress to certify safe practices using radioactive material, protecting citizens and the environment, stated on their website. ... Pullman city councilors’ salaries almost doubled after being raised for the first time in six years. The city’s Salary Commission had its first meeting to set pay rates for elected city officials. The commission was created last summer and includes retired Pullman Police Chief Ted Weatherly, retired City of Pullman Human Resources manager Karen Sires, Pullman attorney Rob Rembert, and local real estate agent and Pullman Regional Hospital commissioner Joe Pitzer. Along with establishing new pay rates for councilors and the mayor, the commission created a new stipend for the mayor.

Five University of Idaho Sigma Nu fraternity brothers went door-to-door collecting food Saturday morning in a neighborhood near Moscow Middle School in an effort to lessen hunger on the Palouse. They were joined by about 35 other Sigma Nu brothers and hundreds of other volunteers who knocked on doors and rang doorbells Saturday morning in 13 towns in Whitman and Latah counties as part of the area’s largest single-day food drive — the 13th annual Palouse Cares Food Drive and Auctions. ... Pullman’s annual tree lighting ceremony kicked off with a short costume run and ended with a visit from Santa Claus on a chilly afternoon at Pine Street Plaza. Almost 30 children — 10 dressed in Christmas-themed costumes — participated in the eighth annual YMCA of the Palouse Jingle Bell Fun Run. They started the sprint at the YMCA office, proceeded down the path along the South Fork of the Palouse River and crossed the Pine Street pedestrian bridge where hot chocolate and cookies awaited them and the more than 100 people who participated in the holiday activities in downtown Pullman, organized by the Pullman Chamber of Commerce.

Ancient tradition was kept alive in the 1912 Center Great Room in Moscow as members of the Jewish Community of the Palouse gathered for their annual Hanukkah celebration. Hanukkah, which translates to Festival of Lights or Feast of Dedication, is the eight-day Jewish holiday that commemorates the rededication of the Holy Temple in Jerusalem in the second century BCE. ... Longtime Disability Action Center volunteer Criss Ubhoff is known around the office and by local clientele for her sparkling smile and friendly demeanor. As head volunteer, Ubhoff puts in 12 hours of her time every week at the Moscow office to help answer phones, greet people walking through the door, do filing, copying and other office work. In November, she celebrated her 15th anniversary on the job. “I don’t think I’d be happy in any other place. ... I don’t think I’d be comfortable anyplace else,” Ubhoff said.
