Following the National Day of Racial Healing, Spokane NAACP President Kiantha Duncan gave a talk on racial healing and politics in the Foley Speaker room on the Washington State University Campus in Pullman. Duncan emphasized that the discussion was a place for everyone to have a conversation about what racial healing meant and how it could differ person to person. For some people, like Duncan’s grandmother, it could mean living in a white neighborhood without fear. “Thinking about racism being a determinant of health — I think of it like cancer,” Duncan said. ... Winter weather can put a damper on the spirits of any golfer, but a new facility near Pullman is looking to change that. Airway Hills Golf Center on Airport Road opened a new building this winter that houses three indoor golfing simulators and an event space for parties. Owner Trent Goetze demonstrated the simulators Thursday. While it was pouring rain on the Palouse hills outside, inside Goetze was driving the fairway at sunny Pebble Beach, Calif., one of the 95 real-life courses that golfers can “play” on the simulator. When the Moscow High School student decided to do an Extended Learning Internship project he knew exactly what his exploration would be. The ELI program allows students the opportunity to select a topic of interest not offered in the regular curriculum and pursue it further during the course of the semester. The students are required to meet with a coordinator during the semester and choose from mentors within the community to help guide them through the learning process. ... Jean Anderson says staying at home is boring. As one of dozens of regular volunteers at Pullman Regional Hospital, where she can usually be found in the gift shop or at the information desk, and a member of the Grandmothers Club in Colfax, where she helps run their thrift store, Thrifty Grandmother’s, she keeps pretty busy. And since the 50-year Albion resident has been doing both for more than two decades, she knows what she’s doing. For her though, it’s really all about the people. “I like meeting new people. That’s really why I enjoy it,” she said. “Everyone is interesting in some way.”
