The Whitman Hospital and Medical Clinics Laboratory has received accreditation from the Accreditation Committee of the College of American Pathologists. The College of American Pathologists is an organization of 18,000 board-certified pathologists, serving patients and the public by encouraging outstanding practice of pathology and laboratory medicine worldwide, according to a new release from the hospital. ... Two Moscow High School students were stunned during the recent National FFA Agriscience Fair as the third- and second-place projects in their division were announced. Their names hadn’t been called, and that could only mean one thing. Through the microphone and in front of thousands of members at the convention, they finally heard what they had been thinking. They had won. Moscow’s Samantha Smith and Simon Salisbury received first place in the fourth division of animal systems during the fair in late October in Indianapolis.

When he is not patrolling Latah County streets for 12 hours at a time as a deputy, the next-best place to find Scott Luther is on top of the wooden driver’s stand at the newly installed dirt, off-road, radio-controlled car track just south of Scenic 6 Park in Potlatch. Luther, 40, who lives outside Potlatch, said he tries to race his electric, two-wheel drive stadium truck, which is red with yellow flames, every other week with his family and Palouse River RC club members — a small club consisting of members from as far away as Lewiston and Spokane. ... This time each year, those on the Palouse fill shoeboxes with toiletries, school supplies and toys before dropping them off at a specified location in Moscow, Pullman or Colfax. The shoeboxes are placed in large cartons, shipped to a processing center and distributed to children in poverty throughout the world. It is called Operation Christmas Child, an annual program hosted by a nondenominational evangelical Christian organization called Samaritan’s Purse.

In a rush of “ayes,” the Idaho State Board of Education voted 8-0 Monday to appoint Chuck Staben the next president of the University of Idaho. He is provost and vice president of academic affairs at the University of South Dakota. It was a busy day for Staben, who met the press immediately after the board meeting and mingled with community members at a 90-minute afternoon reception in the Kibbie Dome. Staben will begin his term March 1 with a three-year contract at an annual salary of $350,000. ... Fresh off a 24-17 win at Arizona, Washington State Athletic Director Bill Moos offered football coach Mike Leach a contract extension Monday that will last through the 2018 season. Leach agreed to the new terms, keeping him in place for years to come. “Mike Leach has done a fabulous job in his short time at Washington State,” Moos said.
