Many might see Veronica Ewers’ showing last week at the women’s UCI Road World Cycling Championships in Wollongong, Australia, as another instance of the 28-year-old Moscow High School alum exceeding all reasonable expectations. However, she feels she could have done better, and hopes to do so. Ewers led Team USA with a 23rd-place showing, finishing only 13 seconds after champion Annemiek van Vleuten, who nosed ahead of a large pack for a top time of 4 hours, 24 minutes, 25 seconds on the 102-mile course. ... Moscow students who are old enough to vote, or close to it, were called upon to take action if they want to address climate change. “The legislation that is passed today will be the framework for tomorrow’s sustainability efforts,” said Moscow High School senior Ian Schlater. Schlater and MHS junior Audrey Pollard are members of the Climate Justice League who took the stage at East City Park to address their classmates during the annual Youth Rally for Climate Action.

Located right along the South Fork of the Palouse River between North Grand Avenue and Northwest State Street in Pullman, the Lumberyard is expected to soon bring six new cuisine options, two bars, a children’s corner and even an arcade room to the city’s residents. While the date is not certain, the Lumberyard is expected to open in late October, co-owner Greg Petry said. Petry, a Pullman native, said he had been sitting on the idea of opening a food hall for several years and even looked at locations as far as Eugene, Ore., and Walla Walla, Wash. ... What was thought to be a land mine donated to Goodwill in Moscow was determined to be an inert training device and was removed from the store by the Fairchild Air Force Base bomb squad. The device was first reported to Moscow police and the Moscow Volunteer Fire Department at about 4:40 p.m. and was removed from the store at about 9 p.m. The device was initially reported as a World War II-era landmine found in a donation box with other Army memorabilia.

Thousands braved the weather to line the streets along downtown Moscow in celebration of the University of Idaho’s 104th Annual Homecoming Parade. With music from marching bands, drums and bagpipes filling the air, more than 100 floats, cars and band entries sported black and gold colors celebrating the year’s theme — Vandal Pride, Planetwide. Among those back for the homecoming celebration were Sharon and Rich Allen of McCall, Idaho, two of the four grand marshals for the parade. The former Vandals have remained active with their alma mater throughout the years since their graduation. ... Alfredo Bautista, 46, knows the value of hard work. His amiable smile is familiar to many who live in Pullman. Bautista has been working in the local service industry for nearly 25 years, and has been the manager of the Zzu since it opened in 2005. But he is a long way from where he started. He grew up in Molcaxac Puebla, a small town south of Mexico City, the fifth of 12 children in his family. “My dad always told me you have to give more than 100 percent, to pay attention to detail and quality,” Bautista said. That’s the approach I take with every job I’ve ever had — I try to conquer it.”
