2023 One year ago

A semi-tractor trailer crash south of Colfax spilled an estimated 6,000 gallons of fuel with some of the liquid leaking into Spring Flat Creek. A truck with two trailers transporting fuel was driving southbound on U.S. Highway 195, 3 miles south of Colfax. A cat ran into the road, and when the driver swerved to miss the animal, he lost control of the vehicle, according to a Washington State Patrol news release. Trooper Ryan Senger said the second trailer flipped on its side and dumped a “significant amount” of fuel on the ground. He said it was more than the Washington State Patrol typically sees in terms of spills. ... TV host Nancy Grace joined the ranks of national media personalities who have traveled to Moscow to cover the story of the four University of Idaho students who were murdered at an off-campus residence Nov. 13. But Grace’s appearance seemed to hit a nerve with some online. Posts on Twitter, Facebook and Reddit criticized Grace for making on-camera appearances while sitting at a table in front of the house at 1122 King Road where the murders took place. “Our tragedy in not your backdrop,” read one tweet from the Barstool Idaho #VandalStrong account, which included a picture of Grace at the crime scene.

Washington State University is creating a neuroscience center named for former Cougar and New Orleans Saints defensive back Steve Gleason. The Steve Gleason Institute for Neuroscience is expected to open at the school’s satellite campus in Spokane in the second half of the year. Daryll DeWald, chancellor of WSU Health Sciences Spokane, said the institute will have Washington State researchers working with health care providers to bridge the gaps between care and potential treatments of neuro-degenerative diseases. That class of diseases includes ALS and Parkinson’s. ... The Moscow Board of Adjustment unanimously approved a conditional-use permit that will allow New Saint Andrews College to designate an unregulated parking lot the school owns on South Jackson Street for its students and employees during regular business hours. The approval partially satisfies the off-street parking requirement of the school’s newest location at the former Cadillac Jack’s building on North Main Street.

The Moscow City Council chambers was nearly filled with people interested in a plan to route three “megaloads” of oil field equipment through the community. Local government officials learned how the transportation company, Mammoet USA South Inc, intends to move the loads that will be 441 feet long, 27 feet wide, 16 feet tall and weigh about 1.6 million pounds each through Moscow en route to a refinery in Great Falls, Mont.
