The Evangelical Lutheran Good Samaritan Society is selling about 30% of its properties, including a nursing home, assisted living center and two independent living retirement communities in Moscow. Cascadia Healthcare is buying Moscow Village and Fairview Village Estates as well as the Good Samaritan’s other Pacific Northwest facilities, said Tim Nelson, a principal of Olympus Retirement Living. The deal is scheduled to close March 1 and will shift the operations from not-for-profit to for-profit, he said, but Cascadia plans to honor the existing contracts for residents. ... After her sister, Beverly, was killed by her fiance, Barbara Jordan’s life mission was solidified — to educate the nation and to touch as many lives as she can. Jordan, founder of Always Bev, will be coming to Washington State University in Pullman to teach the community about situational awareness. She will be hosting personal safety workshops, accompanied by WSU Police Department Chief of Police Gary Jenkins and Assistant Chief Dawn Daniels, to share her passion of self defense.

When Colin Briggs joined Lena Whitmore to teach physical education in fall 2015, he was the only male teacher on staff and immediately saw an opportunity to do more. Starting that first year and each of the years after, Briggs, 28, has led the Genuine Quality Club, encouraging male fifth-graders to aspire to their higher selves. “I want to do more than just be the PE teacher — I want to give them the skills to be a good person,” Briggs said. “These ideals and these expectations of what it means to be a gentleman can be carried through the rest of their life.” ... The Kenworthy Performing Arts Centre and the Nuart Theatre in downtown Moscow would be allowed to sell beer and wine during movies if a bill, sponsored by House Minority Leader Mat Erpelding, D-Boise, and Rep. Caroline Nilsson Troy, R-Genesee, passes the state Legislature. Erpelding said the legislation would allow Idaho theaters listed on the National Register of Historic Places and built before 1950 to obtain a license to sell beer and wine during motion pictures. About 13 historic theaters could benefit from the legislation.

For the first time in almost a decade, the Washington State University psychology clinic is offering services for children. Three doctoral students along with their supervisors are offering assessment and treatment to anyone under 18. The clinic will continue to offer adult services. The clinic, which began child services in January, is the only place in Pullman people can bring their child for assessment and therapy on a sliding-scale fee based on income, said primary supervisor Dr. Masha Gartstein.
