Gladish arts facility to honor Beatriz Schweitzer
Cultural center still raising money for venue, after landing $1.5M from the Schweitzers
The Gladish Community and Cultural Center has revealed the name of its coming arts venue — the Beatriz Schweitzer Centre for the Arts.
Beatriz and Edmund Schweitzer gave the center a generous gift of $1.5 million, according to a news release from the Gladish.
Edmund Schweitzer is well-known in the community for founding Schweitzer Engineering Laboratories. Both Schweitzers have been longtime supporters of the arts, according to the release.
The gift will play a pivotal role in building the Centre for the Arts, at the Gladish, a few blocks west of N. Grand Ave. in Pullman. When constructed, it will be a state of the art cultural and performance venue, according to the release.
In recognition of the Schweitzers’ continued commitment to the arts, the arts venue will be named in their honor.
Beatriz is recognized for her support of the Washington Idaho Symphony. Edmund is renowned for work as an electrical engineer, inventor and leader in the field of digital protection for electrical power systems, according to the news release.
The Gladish raised around $3.2 million in grants, donations and pledges before receiving the Schweitzers’ gift. Its goal is to raise $10 million. Donations are still needed to meet this goal, according to the news release.
