UI institute to offer East Asian film symposium

The University of Idaho Habib Institute for Asian Studies will have a symposium on East Asian ecocinema from Feb. 22-23 with research on ecology, science fiction, documentary and travel film. The keynote address will be given at 1:30 p.m. Feb. 22 in the Clearwater Room of the Idaho Student Union Building and will be given by Kiu-wai Chu from Nanyang Technology University in Singapore. The talk will discuss ecocinema and the new wave of Chinese science fiction.

There will be a screening of Bong Joon-ho’s movie “Okja” at 7 p.m. Feb. 22 at the Kenworthy Performing Arts Center, 508 S. Main St., Moscow. A second keynote address is scheduled at 1:30 p.m. Feb. 23 in the Clearwater Room of the Idaho Student Union Building covering “Netflix ‘The Days’ and eco cinematic nuclear disaster,” and will be given by Rachel DiNitto from the University of Oregon. German Navy officer to give presentation on war in Ukraine

The Martin Forum at the University of Idaho will bring German Rear Admiral Ulrich Reineke to give a presentation on the Ukraine War at 5:30 p.m. Feb. 21 in the Vandal Ballroom of the Bruce M. Pitman Center, 709 Deakin Ave., Moscow. The talk is part of the weeklong visit to the university and Reineke will also teach a short course on NATO and meet with students.

Reineke is the director of plans and policy for the German Navy.

The Martin Forum is organized by the Martin Institute and features lectures on international issues. The lectures are suited to a nonpartisan audience and have covered issues like war, human rights, socioeconomics and resources or development.
