Nonprofit to discuss drug abuse at Moscow event

The public is invited to attend a presentation on the effect of drug abuse on individuals, families and communities at 6 p.m. Thursday at the Moscow High School Auditorium.

The speaker, Michael DeLeon, is the founder of Steered Straight, a nonprofit organization that aims to educate youth and communities about the dangers of substance use, gangs and other criminal behavior.

In his presentation, he will offer practical advice and empowerment to parents and students on how to prevent drug use and addiction.

Steered Straight will also be doing presentations on the dangers of vaping, fentanyl and overdoses, held during classes Friday at Moscow Middle School and Paradise Creek High School.

Class on designing comic books scheduled in Uniontown

Artisans at the Dahmen Barn and cartoonist Jorge Pacheco will have a class on designing a comic book at 12:30 p.m. Saturday at the Barn, located at 419 N. Parkway, Uniontown. Registration is required by Thursday and costs $30. To register call (509) 229-3414 or go online at artisanbarn.org.

The class will cover the basic structure of a comic book and characters. The class is open to anyone 12 and older. Pacheco has 37 years of cartoonist experience and has worked for major comic book companies like Marvel, DC, Dark Horse and more. He has worked on characters like the Flintstones, Rocky and Bullwinkle, Space Ghost and Casper the Friendly Ghost.

Master Gardener Program registration is now open

The Latah County Master Gardeners are scheduled to have programs each Thursday from Feb.1 to May 9. The cost to register is $200 with a possible $100 year-end refund. The program will cover topics like soil and composting, fruit tree pruning, vegetable gardening and more.
