University of Idaho announces Borah Symposium details

The University of Idaho Borah Symposium is scheduled from Monday through Wednesday in Moscow and will discuss the rise of autocratic governments and the spread of democracy. The keynote speaker is Fiona Hill, a distinguished senior fellow at the Brookings Institution and a former deputy assistant on Russian affairs to former President Donald Trump.

There will be a fireside chat with Hill moderated by UI professor Kenton Bird at 7 p.m. Monday at the International Ballroom of the Bruce M. Pitman Center, 709 Deakin Ave., Moscow. The Renfrew Colloquium is at 12:30 p.m. Tuesday in the Vandal Ballroom of the Bruce M. Pitman Center. The colloquium will discuss “Updating Senator Borah: A Nuclear Kellogg-Briand Pact.”

There will be a documentary screening of “Putin’s Attack on Ukraine: Documenting War Crimes” at 7 p.m. Tuesday at the Kenworthy Performing Arts Centre, 508 S. Main St., Moscow. The closing address is at 7 p.m. Wednesday at the International Ballroom of the Bruce M. Pitman Center and will be given by Dirk Kempthorne, former U.S. interior secretary and former governor of Idaho.

Task force to celebrate Human Rights Day

The Latah County Human Rights Task Force will celebrate Human Rights Day from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday at the Moscow Farmers Market. The theme is freedom of expression and celebrating our libraries. There will be a drawing for a free children’s book and opportunities for residents to learn about community engagement and state legislation reagdring book choices and availability.

United Way has fundraiser and school supply drive

The Bull Country Community Days of Caring fundraiser will start Oct. 4 at Washington State Employees Credit Union, 405 SE Bishop Blvd., Pullman. The United Way of Whitman County and United Way of Latah County will be gathering school supplies for Moscow and Pullman school districts. The Moscow location will be announced at a later date.

The fundraisers will last through Oct. 31. Donations can be made online at moscowlatahuw.org.
