The Washington State University Edward R. Murrow College of Communication has selected Maria Hinojosa to receive the Murrow Lifetime Achievement Award in Journalism.

Hinojosa will deliver the keynote address at the 48th Murrow Symposium on April 3, according to a news release. She’ll share her 30 plus years of experience as a Latina journalist and advocate for media diversity.

Hinojosa was born in Mexico City and raised in Chicago, receiving a degree at Barnard College, in New York City. She’s well recognized as the first Latina reporter in many newsrooms she’s worked in.

She’s a former reporter for PBS, CBS, WNBC, CNN and National Public Radio. Hinojosa has also anchored the Emmy Award-winning talk show “Maria Hinojosa: One-on-One.”

Hinojosa has made a name for herself as an award-winning journalist. She’s received four Emmys, two Robert F. Kennedy Awards, the John Chancellor Award, the Studs Terkel Community Media Award and the Ruben Salazar Lifetime Achievement Award.

In 2010, she began Futuro Media, a journalism nonprofit that explores American diversity. Its podcast series, “Suave,” won a Pulitzer Prize in 2022.

The WSU Alumni Association’s virtual book club, Well Read Cougs, has selected Hinojosa’s 2020 book, “Once I Was You: A Memoir of Love and Hate in a Torn America,” as its first pick of 2024. Anyone is welcome to participate at no charge.

All in-person symposium events will be held at WSU’s Pullman campus April 3-4, along with virtual happenings. This year’s focus is on Edward R. Murrow’s commitment to innovation, courage and integrity, as well as highlighting ways of illuminating stories.
