A panel has selected Boise artist Jay Rasgorshek’s submission for a mural on the Moscow city building located on Jackson and A streets.

Rasgorshek’s proposed mural scored the highest on the panel’s criteria, which judges the design on its relevance to Moscow, its uniqueness and its craftsmanship. It was selected out of 52 submissions.

The Moscow Arts Commission and the Moscow City Council must also approve the design. If approved by the city council, the mural is slated for installation in September.

Rasgorshek’s wrote in his artist statement that he spoke to the Palouse-Clearwater Environment Institute and The Palouse Prairie Foundation before submitting his mural, which incorporates the camas lilly and local species of animals.

The selection panel, which met on Monday, did suggest he make the background of his mural blue in order to add more color to the image.

The Jackson and A street building was previously decorated with a mural, but that mural was damaged by vandalism in May 2023.
