KAMIAH — The Nez Perce-Clearwater National Forest wrapped up a three-day virtual meeting this week with people and conservation groups who filed objections or comments on the proposed land management plan. The draft plan will help guide the agency’s decisions and actions on the 4 million acre forests for the future.

According to a news release from the agency Friday, there were about 275 eligible objections or comments to the plan that was released in November.

Objectors were required to have submitted timely and specific comments that included such topics as wildlife, recreation, wild and scenic rivers, wilderness, old growth, timber management, climate change and other issues.

The discussions this week and recommendations will be reviewed by Leann Marten, the regional forester, who will craft a response and any recommendations for adjustments that need to be made before the Forest Plan is finalized. Marten’s decisions are expected to be released later this summer.

Forest Supervisor Cheryl Probert said in the news release that the discussions were part of a “robust public participation process. The goal is to try to resolve concerns collaboratively before a final decision is issued later this year. It’s also an opportunity for objectors with differing opinions to hear each other and potentially suggest compromises to address multiple concerns.”
