Guided nature walk planned for Friday at Chief Timothy Park

Naturalist Michelle Schmidt, of Lewiston, will lead a guided nature walk through Chief Timothy Park west of Clarkston at 10 a.m. Friday.

The Asotin County Library program will focus on the flora and fauna of the area and Schmidt will share ecological insights and help participants foster a deeper connection to the natural world.

Adventure seekers of all ages are welcome, but children ages 13 and younger must be accompanied by an adult.

Those interested can meet at the main parking lot near the swimming beach. Participants are advised to check in at the park’s entrance station and tell park officials they are there for the Asotin County Library Nature walk. The entrance fee will be waived for participants.

Licenses now required to fish for freshwater smelt, crawfish and carp in Washington

OLYMPIA — A new law requiring licenses for people who fish for freshwater smelt, crawfish and carp in Washington took effect earlier this month.

According to a Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife news release, the license requirement aims to improve fishing regulation compliance and provide information on appropriate gear, seasons and species-specific limits.

“As Washington’s population grows and recreational fishing activity increases, we often feel the strain on our natural resources,” said Kelly Cunningham, fish program director for the agency. “A fishing license requirement can help promote sustainable fishing practices while safeguarding endangered species.”

Under the law, Washington fishing or shellfishing licenses will be required to fish for freshwater smelt and crawfish. A fishing license is also required to fish for carp, except for Moses Lake and Vancouver Lake, where the requirement is exempt.
