Board considers revising its student phone usage policy

Pullman school are debating whether to revise its policy on student cell phone usage.

The Pullman School Board will consider drafting new cell phone restrictions during its regular meeting at the Pullman High School at 6:30 tonight.

The change follows recent guidance published by the Washington Office of Superintendent of Public Instruction that advises schools statewide to tighten cell phone rules to improve student learning, according to documents attached to the meeting agenda.

Smart device and social media use has increased among youth in the past years. The documents say more restrictions on cell phones has the potential to improve concentration, learning, and mental and physical health.

Elementary, middle and high school students are currently prohibited from cell phone access during class, but can use them during lunch breaks and between classes. The revision would ban elementary and middle school students from using their devices for the entire school day, according to the documents.

High school students would still be able to use cell phones during lunch and between classes. The documents say students would still have their phones and devices taken away until the end of the day if they break the rules.

No action will be taken during the Pullman School Board meeting. The draft cell phone policy will be reviewed for consideration of final approval at a later meeting.
